Mara Grunbaum

Welcome

I'm a Brooklyn-based freelance science journalist specializing in biology, nature and the environment. I'm particularly fond of all things ocean-related, or anything weird and gross and wonderful (not mutually exclusive—this sums it up nicely). My work has appeared in Discover, Popular Science, OnEarth and Scientific American, among others. I also make videos and have experience fact-checking and copy editing.

I recently graduated from NYU's master's program in Science, Health and Environmental Reporting. Before that I spent a couple of years as a local reporter in Portland, Oregon, where my reporting on asylum patients buried in a local cemetery won a Society of Professional Journalists award.

One time I fact-checked a planet to death.
